Kaziranga National Park in Assam serves as a habitat for 17 different species of turtles, making it a significant conservation area
Digital Desk: Every year on 23rd May since 2000, World Turtle Day has been celebrated to raise awareness and conservation of endangered turtles and tortoises. It is crucial to note that even though they help control the environment, these ancient reptiles are gradually disappearing from their habitats due to human destruction.
Turtles and tortoises are classified into two groups, using physical and behavioral traits, by scientists. What makes Kaziranga National Park in Assam important is that it provides a home to 17 different species of turtles. What stands out is that only Kaziranga serves as a home for the Assam Roofed Turtle, a rare and special species in the world.
International conservation authorities listed that both the Borkach (Black Softshell Turtle) and Durakach (Tricarinate Hill Turtle) are critically endangered among the many species here. A shortage of their native habitats is bringing them very close to extinction.
Despite these challenges, Kaziranga presents tourists the unique chance to witness the fascinating creatures in the Bagori Range, showcasing the park’s rich biodiversity and the aesthetic charm of turtles in the world.
