Digital Desk: Male menopause (andropause) is caused by decreasing testosterone levels caused by hormonal changes in males as they age. In women, menopause causes a complete end to ovulation over a relatively shorter period of time. In men, the decreased testosterone levels and hormone production happen slowly and gradually. So, after a man reaches the age of 30, his testosterone levels decline by 1% per year. This implies that the testes will not stop producing testosterone completely. Also, due to aging and chronic ailments like diabetes and HTN, there are certain changes in the function of the testes when one becomes 45 to 50 years old. A man's testosterone levels may decrease by about 50% once he reaches the age of 70. Moreover, obesity, type 2 diabetes, hormonal disorders, liver or renal disease, and infections can all cause andropause to occur earlier than usual.

    Causes

Low testosterone production, aging, and excessive production of the hormone SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin) can lead to andropause.

    Symptoms

High body fat percentage, erectile dysfunction, decreased libido (low sex drive), poor sleep, dry skin, depression, low energy, hot flashes, loss of muscle mass, inability to focus, excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, are some of the symptoms.  Some men may also experience severe complications such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular problems.

    Diagnosis

A urologist or an expert in male fertility (andrologist) can diagnose it through medical examination and symptoms. It is advised not to delay further treatment after the diagnosis.

    Treatment

Skin patches are helpful. People who wear a testosterone patch can receive the hormone through their skin. Testosterone Gel can be applied directly to the skin, i.e. on the arms, and must be washed off the hands after each use to avoid transmitting it to others. Capsules can be taken twice a day after meals, but men suffering from other major health conditions, such as heart disease, must refrain from using these capsules. Moreover, lifestyle changes such as exercise, good nutrition, and stress reduction aid in the management of andropause symptoms. Medication or testosterone replacement therapy can also be recommended for some men. You must only stick to the doctor's instructions. Self-medication is hazardous; avoid doing it.
