Digital Desk: Russian tennis player Daria Kasatkina revealed on Monday that she is gay and that she finds "living in the closet" difficult.

The 25-year-old, a semifinalist at the French Open last month, claimed that Russian soccer player Nadya Karpova's confession of her sexuality in a nation where homosexuality is illegal motivated her to speak out.

"Living in peace with oneself is the only thing that matters, f**k everyone else," Kasatkina said after revealing to Russian blogger Vitya Kravchenko that she has a girlfriend.

"I believe it is important that influential people in sports and other fields speak out about it. It is crucial for young people who struggle in society and want assistance," she added.

Russian Lawmakers have proposed expanding a ban on the promotion of "non-traditional" sexual relationships to adults.

The existing "gay propaganda" law in Russia, passed in 2013, has been used to halt gay pride marches and arrest LGBT rights activists.
