The Dalai Lama's gesture comes after severe floods devastated the Himalayan state, wreaking havoc on infrastructure and connections throughout the region.

The flash flood was caused by an outburst of Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim in the early hours of October 4, causing high inflow into the Teesta River.

Bridges, parts of NH10, small towns, and infrastructure in Sikkim's Teesta River Valley were extensively damaged as a result of the flash flood.
