Digital Desk: Assembly elections in Tripura were held on Thursday, with the Left parties and the Congress uniting to fight the BJP, with Tipra Motha also hoping to mount a strong challenge.
Trinamool Congress has also fielded candidates for several seats.
There are 259 candidates in total, including 20 women. The votes will be counted on March 2.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is running in tandem with the Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT). The BJP has candidates in 55 constituencies, while the IPFT has candidates in six.
The BJP has nominated 12 female candidates. The Left Front is running for 47 seats, while Congress is running for 13 seats.
There are 58 independent candidates and Trinamool Congress is running for 28 seats.
Manik Saha, the Chief Minister, is running for re-election from the Town of Borodowali. The Congress Party has nominated Ashish Kumar Saha to run against him.
Manik Saha took over as chief minister in May of last year, succeeding Biplab Kumar Deb.
Jishnu Dev Varma, Deputy Chief Minister, is running for the Charilam seat.
Rajiv Bhattacharjee, Tripura BJP state president, is running from the Banamalipur constituency.
Former Chief Minister Biplab Deb formerly held the seat.
Jitendra Choudhury, state general secretary of the CPI(M), is contesting for the Sabroom constituency.
Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik has been nominated by the BJP to represent the Dhanpur constituency. Bhoumik is the first woman from Tripura and the second woman from the Northeast to be appointed to the Union Cabinet. Tipra Motha has put Amiya Dayal Noatia in the seat to face Bhoumik.
Pranajit Singh Roy, a current MLA from Radhakishorpur, has been nominated by the BJP. He is up against Partha Karmakar of the CPI-ML.
In Agartala, Papiya Dutta of the BJP will fight Sudip Roy Barman of the Congress.
Priyamani Debbarma of the CPI(M) is running in Karbook against Ashim Tripura of the BJP and Sanjay Manik of Tipra Motha.
The BJP obtained 36 seats in the assembly. The party received 43.59 percent of the vote. With 42.22 percent of the vote, the CPI (M) gained 16 seats. The IPFT received eight representatives, but Congress was unable to activate its account.
According to the Election Commission, 28,14,584 electorates are eligible to vote at 3,337 polling locations, of whom 14,15,233 are male voters, 13,99,289 are female voters, and 62 are of the third gender.
The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For the polls, adequate security precautions have been implemented. All poll workers have arrived at their polling places.
The BJP came to victory in the recent election in conjunction with the IPFT, deposing the Left Front, which had ruled the border state for 35 years since 1978.
The BJP hopes to enhance its performance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and party chairman JP Nadda are all campaigning in the state.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, and Yogi Adiyanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, both campaigned in the state.
CPI(M) national secretary Sitaram Yechury campaigned for the party in Tripura, as did senior party officials Brinda Karat, Prakash Karat, Mohammad Salim, and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Dipa Dasmunshi, and Ajoy Kumar were among the Congress campaigners.
