Digital Desk: Suspended BJP spokesman Nupur Sharma, who got harsh criticism last year for her provocative remarks about Prophet Mohammad, has been granted a permit to carry a gun. Sharma earlier claimed that she had received multiple death threats over her statement.
Sharma stirred controversy last year when she made controversial remarks about Prophet Mohammed during a TV debate.
According to officials, the suspended BJP leader was given the license by Delhi Police for self-protection after she requested it.
Nupur Sharma's remark against the Prophet during a TV debate sparked tremendous uproar across the country, as well as widespread condemnation from various Gulf countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan, and Qatar.
Following the backlash, the BJP suspended her from the party. The party also issued a statement stating that it respects all religions and firmly condemns disrespect toward religious figures.
Last year, the Supreme Court slammed Sharma, saying her "loose tongue" has "set the entire country on fire" and that she is "single-handedly responsible" for what is occurring in the country.
Sharma had earlier claimed that she and her family had received rape and death threats after a video of the TV debate went viral on social media.
"I am getting continuous death and beheading threats against my family and myself. I’m being bombarded with rape, death and beheading threats against my sister, mother, father and myself. I’ve communicated same to Delhi Police," Sharma had said in a tweet.
In June of last year, the Delhi Police also provided security to the suspended BJP leader after she claimed she had received threats and was being harassed because of her remarks.
