    India hosts the first meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association

    Representatives from 53 Commonwealth countries and nine regions will participate in the meeting.

    Branches of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Assembly are formed in parliaments and legislatures of Commonwealth countries. In addition to promoting knowledge and understanding of parliamentary democracy, the CPA works to promote good governance, transparency and accountability, adherence to the rule of law, and individual rights.

    CPA is a hundred-year-old organization. Taking place for the first time in India, the CPA's mid-year executive committee meeting will be held in Guwahati from April 9 to 10, the association said in a statement.

    The meeting will focus on how to improve parliamentary democratic systems.

    The meeting was inaugurated today by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in the presence of Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
