    Mukul Rohatgi set to become the Attorney General of India once again
    Rohatgi accepted last week's request from the Prime Minister's Office for him to take over as Attorney General.

    Digital Desk: Veteran attorney Mukul Rohatgi promised to resume his duties as India's Attorney General on October 1, beginning his second term as the nation's top law enforcement official.

    According to those with knowledge of the situation, Rohatgi agreed to take the top position last week after the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) requested it.

    He will replace renowned attorney KK Venugopal, 91, who announced his inability to continue once his third extension as leader ends on September 30. In June, Venugopal consented to a brief extension of three months.

    Soon after the new administration assumed office in 2014, Rohatgi served as Attorney General for the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government till 2017. Venugopal was then allowed three extensions after being appointed attorney general.

    Venugopal recently said during a hearing that he might not stay on as the chief law officer after his current term is over.
