Digital Desk: In a bid to safeguard public safety and maintain order, the Manipur government has announced a further extension of the suspension of mobile tower operations providing internet services in select districts for an additional 15 days. Effective immediately, this decision encompasses a 2 Km radius along adjoining areas between specified districts, highlighting the government's unwavering dedication to addressing concerns related to law and order.

The directive, issued by Commissioner (Home) T Ranjit Singh on Monday, imposes a suspension on mobile towers facilitating internet services between districts including Chandel and Kakching, Churachandpur and Bishnupur, Churachandpur and Kakching, Kangpokpi and Imphal West, Kangpokpi and Imphal East, Kangpokpi and Thoubal, and Tengnoupal and Kakching. This measure is slated to remain enforced until January 2, 2024.

This move follows a comprehensive assessment of the current law and order scenario and its potential link to the temporary internet service suspension over the past fortnight. Commissioner Singh stressed compliance, directing all mobile service providers to adhere strictly to the order. Additionally, internet users have been urged to avoid activities that might necessitate future suspensions.

Authorized under Rule 2 of Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017, this order is subject to periodic review, reflecting the dynamic nature of security concerns and allowing for adjustments as the situation evolves.

Initially relaxed on December 3, the suspension of internet and mobile data, including MMS services, was broadened to cover the entire territorial jurisdiction of Manipur, valid until December 18, 2023. However, the current extension focuses specifically on mobile towers within the 2 Km radius of the mentioned districts.

This strategic decision underscores the government's commitment to strike a balance between the indispensable need for communication services and the paramount importance of ensuring public safety and thwarting potential security threats in the specified regions.
