Digital Desk: After a significant gap of 14 years, Guwahati residents found themselves sweltering in unprecedented heat on Monday, with the mercury soaring to a scorching 38.2°C. This is now the highest maximum temperature ever recorded in the month of September in the year 2023.
The previous record for the highest maximum temperature in September stood at 37.8°C, recorded on September 28, 2009. However, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that Monday's temperature is believed to be one of the highest maximum temperatures recorded throughout this year.
Guwahati has had its fair share of extreme weather this year. On June 7, the city witnessed a maximum temperature of 38.9°C, marking it as the second-highest maximum temperature for the month of June in the last 12 years since 2011, according to the IMD.
Neighboring Silchar, located in Assam's Barak Valley region, also experienced record-breaking temperatures on Monday. The city saw a blistering high of 39.4°C, which is believed to be the highest rise in maximum temperature ever recorded in September. The previous high temperature in Silchar was 39.2°C on September 2, 2005.
The relentless heatwave, attributed to dry and hot weather conditions in the region, has taken a toll on residents, particularly the elderly and children, for the past few days.
The IMD has issued a weather forecast for the upcoming days, indicating that Guwahati can expect more hot weather in the immediate future. The minimum temperature is expected to hover around 27°C, leading to warm and uncomfortable nights. However, there is a ray of hope on the horizon, as the IMD anticipates possible rain or thunderstorms starting from Wednesday onwards.
In response to the prevailing heatwave, the IMD has offered valuable advice to residents. They recommend staying indoors during the day to avoid the scorching sun and emphasize the importance of staying well-hydrated. It is crucial to take precautions, especially during this period of extreme weather.

Furthermore, the IMD has issued a warning regarding thunderstorms and lightning in some parts of Assam expected on Wednesday and Thursday. Residents are strongly advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during these potentially hazardous weather conditions.
As the region battles this exceptional heatwave, residents are eagerly awaiting the much-needed relief that rain and cooler temperatures can bring, hoping to soon escape the grip of this extraordinary weather event.
