Digital Desk: On Tuesday, the Tai Ahom group in Assam celebrated their sacred holiday Me-Dam-Me-Phi with widespread celebrations across the state.

Several pujas are performed during the cherished occasion as the members of the community remember their forefathers. Prayers are also offered for humanity's well-being.

Every year on January 31, the celebration is traditionally celebrated. The community is enjoying the day-long programme following all customs and traditions.

According to sources, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would attend the festivities in Tipam, Assam's Dibrugarh district.

"Me" refers to prayer or worship, "Dam" refers to the dead, and "Phi" refers to deo or deity.

The Tai Ahom society believes that when the ancestors are satisfied, they would bestow blessings from heaven through this social and religious event.

Meanwhile, in Tipam, Naharkatia MLA Taranga Gogoi stated, "We are expecting the CM to arrive soon. Everyone here is in a joyous spirit for the event.

The CM's first journey to Tipam will take him not only to the foothills but also to the mountaintop where Swargdeo Sukaphaa first set foot."

"We hope that individuals who were unaware of Tipam will become aware of it now. Several areas have developed under CM Sarma's leadership.

Tipam, on the other hand, had not seen such progress. "The people are hopeful that he will bring Tipam development," Gogoi stated.

At the mountaintop where Ahom king Sukaphaa previously stood, CM Sarma, is anticipated to do traditional pujas and offer prayers.

Taranga Gogoi further stated that he discussed Tipam development plans with the Chief Minister of Assam. Those plans, however, will be revealed by the CM himself when he arrives.

Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, attended the event at his official house. Following the customary 'Fura Lung' last night, he sat for various rituals early this morning.

While praying to the ancestors, Sonowal wished for the well-being of the entire nation.
