Forest secretary of Tamil Nadu refutes Assam's claim about temple elephants
The Assam chief secretary's letter includes a video that was more than 1.5 years old. As a result of the incident, the mahout Vinilkumar and cavadi Sivaprasanth were sacked.

Digital Desk: The claim that Joymala, the elephant at the Srivilliputhur Andal temple, was mistreated by its mahout has been refuted by state forest secretary Supriya Sahu.

"Unfortunately, the Assam government didn't bother to verify facts with the TN government before sending a team of officers without any jurisdiction or authority to land in Chennai, armed with an order to inspect the elephants," Sahu said in her response to a letter from the Assam chief secretary, who had ordered a team of officials to inspect Joymala and other elephants in Tamil Nadu.

The video included in the Assam chief secretary's letter was over a year and a half old. Mahout Vinilkumar and cavadi Sivaprasanth were fired as a result of the event. Joymala has been in the loving care of a team led by mahout Subramaniam and Cavadi Ranjithkumar since then, she claimed.

The old film was re-circulated by PeTA India and numerous other individuals to sensationalize the situation, she said, adding that the Tamil Nadu government took the problem seriously.

The Chief Wildlife Warden has served PeTA India with a legal notification demanding that it remove the outdated video from its social media platforms and apologize.

The government is now looking after nine elephants entrusted to various temples. Members of district committees established under the Tamil Nadu Captive Elephant (Management and Maintenance) Rules, 2011, pay monthly visits to these elephants to ensure their well-being.

This is to advise you that the problem of captive elephants in Tamil Nadu is currently being heard in the Madras high court, which has been examining matters connected to the presence of captive elephants and their ownership details, she added.
