Digital Desk: In a strategic move, five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians have appointed the dynamic all-rounder Hardik Pandya as the captain for the upcoming 2024 season. The 30-year-old cricketer, who returned to Mumbai Indians from the Gujarat Titans in a high-profile all-cash deal in November, is set to lead the franchise after a stellar career with the team.

Pandya takes over the captaincy reins from Rohit Sharma, who led the team to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. The news of Pandya's appointment was officially announced on the team's Instagram handle on Friday, marking a significant leadership transition for the powerhouse franchise.

In a statement, the Mumbai Indians acknowledged the legacy built by their previous captains, stating, "It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready." The franchise emphasized its commitment to fostering exceptional leadership and ensuring the team's readiness for future challenges.

Global Head of Performance for Mumbai Indians, Mahela Jayawardene, commented on the decision, saying, "It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season."

Pandya, a proven match-winner, previously clinched four IPL titles with Mumbai Indians in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. His brief stint with the Gujarat Titans in 2022 saw him captain the team to their maiden IPL title in their debut season. Mumbai Indians fans eagerly anticipate the all-rounder's leadership as they aim for continued success in the upcoming season.
