Asian Games 2023: Captain Harmanpreet Kaur to miss matches; fate revealed after ICC's Penalty

Harmanpreet's current two-match penalty has made her ineligible to play in her team's first two games...

Digital Desk: The Indian women's cricket team has suffered a setback ahead of the forthcoming Asian Games, as captain Harmanpreet Kaur will be unable to participate until the squad reaches the event's final in Hangzhou.

Talking about the incident During the match with Bangladesh, the 34-year-old was given a two-match suspension by the ICC earlier this week for her poor behaviour in the third and final ODI against Bangladesh. Harmanpreet was fined 50% of her match fee and given three demerit points for smashing the stumps in frustration after being dismissed. She was later found guilty of violating Article 2.8 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which prohibits "showing dissent at an umpire's decision." She was penalised another 25% of the match money and was given another penalty point.

With the Asiad matches gaining official T20I status, India women's team captain Harmanpreet's fate will be determined by her team's performance.

Harmanpreet will miss the quarterfinal and semi-final matches since Asian Games matches are officially counted under the ICC, with participation guaranteed only in the final if the team advances to the gold medal match.

Cricket has been reinstated as one of 37 disciplines in the upcoming Asian Games, which will be contested in Hangzhou, China, beginning September 19.

However, the sport has only appeared in two previous editions - 2010 and 2014 - but BCCI will be sending a men's and women's squad to the event for the first time. Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh are the other men's and women's teams who will compete directly from the final eight stages.

The men's event will include 18 teams and will begin on September 28. The final will be contested on October 7, two days after the Men's ODI World Cup begins, at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium. If Ruturaj Gaikwad's team advances, they will play on three consecutive days: October 5 (quarter-final), October 6 (semi-final), and October 7 (final).

The women's event will include 14 teams and will take place before the start of the men's event. The proceedings will commence on September 19 and conclude on September 26.
