Digital Desk: Royal Challengers Bangalore retained a slow over rate for the second time in the 2023 edition of the IPL against the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday. The sanction was imposed on stand-in captain Virat Kohli and the entire squad for violating the IPL's Code of Conduct. If the squad continues to act in this way for even one more match, it may face serious consequences.
In the match against RR, which RCB won by seven runs, Kohli was fined Rs 24 lakh, and each member of the playing XI, including the impact replacement, was fined Rs 6 lakh or 25% of the match fee, whichever is less, for maintaining a slow-over pace for the second time. Earlier, regular skipper Faf du Plessis was fined Rs 12 lakh for the same offense in a match against the Lucknow Super Giants.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore will face the Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday, April 26. The team will seek to finish bowling inside the 90-minute time limit, which includes 5 minutes for two strategic time-outs. If they fail to do so, the captain would be suspended for one match and fined Rs 30 lakh. This regulation will apply to either Kohli or regular captain du Plessis, depending on who leads the team in the game.
In terms of slow-over rate rules, if the bowling team is unable to finish its 20 overs within the allotted time, they have violated this rule. Teams in the IPL have 90 minutes to bowl 20 overs. This includes 85 minutes of playtime as well as two strategic time-outs of 150 seconds each with five-minute intervals. However, the DRS and injury periods are excluded.
A team's captain is fined Rs 12 lakh if it takes more than 90 minutes to bowl 20 overs in an IPL match. For breaching this rule for the second time, the skipper must pay a fine of Rs 24 lakh. This time, the remaining ten members of the team are also penalized. They must pay Rs 6 lakh, which is 25% of the match price. Any skipper who makes this error for the third time faces a Rs 30 lakh punishment as well as a one-match ban. The remaining ten players face Rs 12 lakh penalties or 50% of the match money, whichever is less.
