Digital Desk: On Tuesday, August 6, Vinesh Phogat bagged one of the biggest win at the Paris Olympics by knocking out reigning champion Yui Susaki of Japan. The Indian wrestler defeated the top seed 3-2 in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarter-finals in the women’s 50 kg category.
This victory was particularly significant as Yui Susaki had not lost a single match on her way to winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Prior to this match, Yui had only been defeated three times in her entire career, and Vinesh became the first wrestler to beat her on the international stage.
Vinesh Phogat approached the match cautiously, as this was her Olympic debut in the 50kg category, having moved down from her usual 53kg weight class. Yui initially took the lead with a point after Vinesh was penalized for a 30-second passivity. The first period ended 1-0 in favor of Yui, and the situation worsened in the second period with another penalty for passivity against Vinesh. With only 15 seconds remaining, it seemed Yui would advance, but Vinesh executed a spectacular move to gain two points and tie the score.
