Digital Desk: A horrifying incident unfolded in Meghalaya's Eastern West Khasi Hills district as a mob of over 1000 people lynched two men accused of attempting to rape an 18-year-old woman. The harrowing incident took place at Nongthliew village near Mairang, the district headquarters, on a Friday afternoon.

According to the victim, the accused barged into her home, brandishing a knife, and attempted to assault her. Her screams alerted neighbors who intervened, apprehending the accused before they could carry out the assault. The mob then took matters into their own hands, subjecting the accused to a violent assault at a nearby community hall.

Police arrived at the scene but were unable to rescue the accused until the mob had exacted its form of justice. Tragically, despite medical attention, both men succumbed to their injuries – one at Tirot Sing Memorial Civil Hospital and the other at Shillong Civil Hospital.

The accused, identified as Melar Kurbah, 36, and Harmendra Kharkylliang, 50, were residents of Umshyrwang village within the same district, allegedly inebriated at the time of the incident.

The victim underwent a medical examination confirming sexual assault, prompting police to launch an investigation. The deceased, hailing from other parts of the state, were working as laborers in Nongthliew. This gruesome incident underscores the urgent need for justice and highlights the complex societal challenges prevailing in certain regions.
