Digital Desk: The year 2022 saw the end of the tribal insurgency in Assam, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday.
757 guns, 5983 miscellaneous ammunitions, 131 grenades, 26 IEDs, and 52 kg explosives were recovered in 2022, with the most of them coming from NDFB, NLFT, Karbi, Dimasa, and Adivasi rebels.

The majority of the arms recovered in 2022 were freely submitted, CM Sarma informed reporters on the first day of 2023.

"We recovered the most guns in Assam's history. The recovery of 757 guns in just one year heralds the end of Assam's tribal insurgency "he stated.

Since the 1980s, Assam has seen carnage.

In 2022, the government negotiated many peace treaties with various ethnic insurgency groups.

Only ULFA (I) is now underground, but their activities have reduced dramatically over the years.

Sarma, who became CM in 2021, has often urged ULFA(I) supremo Paresh Baruah to join the mainstream of society and respond to peace initiatives undertaken by the government, while highlighting the significance of resolving all lingering concerns through discussion.

Notably, the Centre reduced disturbed zones under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from a vast chunk of Assam in 2022, a huge stride taken after decades.

The government stated that the decision was made following a recent evaluation of the law and order and security scenario in Assam, which revealed that the situation has significantly improved in many districts of the state and the presence of extremist elements is limited to specific sections of the state.
AFSPA, which allows security personnel to conduct operations anywhere and arrest anyone without a warrant, has been in effect throughout Assam since 1990.
