In a statement, the authorities said that the bus struck the truck as it was changing tyres by the side of the road in Malawi, which is located in the Minya province approximately 220 kilometers (137 miles) south of Cairo.

Digital Desk: Authorities said that 33 people were hurt and at least 22 people died in an automobile accident on Tuesday close to the Minya province in southern Egypt.

According to a statement from the local government in Minya, the accident happened early one morning when a passenger bus collided with a stopped truck on a route connecting Cairo, the nation's capital, and the south.

When the injured needed to be sent to Minya hospitals, ambulances sped to the scene.

Egypt, which has a dismal track record for transportation safety, has thousands of fatal traffic accidents every year. Speeding, poor road conditions or lax traffic enforcement are the main causes of collisions.
