Digital Desk: Dr Kenneth V. Dodgson, a pioneering American medical missionary and surgeon who revolutionised healthcare in Jorhat, passed away on July 12 at the age of 100.
Commissioned by the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society, he arrived in Jorhat in 1957 and dedicated 24 years of service to the Jorhat Christian Medical Centre.
During his tenure, Dr Dodgson personally performed over 11,000 operations and deliveries, while the 150-bed hospital provided care to more than 1,00,000 admitted patients.
He was instrumental in modernising the institution by expanding its outpatient, radiology, laboratory, physiotherapy and surgical facilities.
Beyond clinical care, he focused on sustainability by training Indian doctors and administrators to lead the hospital independently.
After returning to the United States in 1981, he joined the University of Rochester Medical Center.
His enduring legacy remains central to JCMC, which celebrated its centenary in 2024.
