Earlier, the force started a comprehensive Body Mass Index (BMI) test of every member of its workforce...

Digital Desk: DGP Gyanendra Pratap Singh stated on Saturday that over 2.5% of the 70,161 Assam Police employees are obese and will receive medical attention over the next three months to get fit.

On August 16, the force started a comprehensive Body Mass Index (BMI) test of every member of its workforce.

DGP said in a post on X, "Reference BMI tests, the first phase of the exercise is over. Total no of BMI tests done for @assampolice personnel: 70161 No of Obese (30+BMI) Police Personnel: 1748 (2.47%)

"As approved by Hon @CMOfficeAssathese personnel would now be thoroughly tested at Government Medical Colleges for any underlying medical condition provided medical and nutritional support and tested again after three months. Hope to see a fitter Assam Police in days and years to come. Grateful to Hon CM Sir @himantabiswa Sir and @mygovassam for continued support in our quest to improve the fitness of @assampolice," the DGP GP Singh said.

In the days and years to come, he hoped that these individuals who failed the BMI test would get in shape. In an exam last month, Singh had said that all of the officers who were obese would be asked to visit the Police Training College in Dergaon for the second phase.

They will be kept for up to three months at Dergaon to bring the BMI below 30, depending on the need, with assistance from government physicians and nutritionists, he stated.

Except for those who have genuine medical reasons, such as thyroid issues, the DGP had stated in May that anyone who does not lose weight by the conclusion of the three months will be given the option of voluntarily retiring.
