Digital Desk: At least seven people died after consuming spurious liquor at an illicit hooch joint in the Howrah district of West Bengal on Wednesday.

Moreover, six people have reportedly been admitted to a nearby hospital, and several of them are in critical condition.

"As many as seven people passed away this morning, and many more got sick. According to the initial evidence, the event in Howrah seems to have taken place following the consumption of illegal alcohol, Howrah Police Commissioner Praveen Tripathi told ANI.

"A hospital is providing medical care for six people. After the post-mortem, the precise cause of death can be determined," he added.

Police stated that they have not yet determined the precise reason for the occurrence but that they are looking into it.

The deaths of four people last week in West Bengal's Bardhaman district, purportedly brought on by the ingestion of fake alcohol, caused alarm among the populace. While the police insisted they were awaiting information from the autopsy, numerous hotels and restaurants in the town were raided.
