Digital Desk: In India, the smartphone has become an integral part of daily life, with a staggering 84% of users checking their phones within 15 minutes of waking up, as reported by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG). This pervasive reliance on smartphones is further highlighted by the fact that individuals spend an average of 31 percent of their waking hours glued to their devices, checking them approximately 80 times a day.

The BCG report, titled 'Reimagining Smartphone Experience: How 'Surfaces' Can Play a Key Role in Making the Phone Smarter,' emphasizes that half of the time spent on smartphones is dedicated to streaming content, a significant increase from just two hours in 2010 to nearly 4.9 hours today.

Interestingly, socializing, which dominated phone usage a decade ago, now constitutes only 20-25 percent of smartphone activity in 2023.

The study delves into age-specific trends, revealing that individuals in the 18-24 age group prioritize short-form videos, such as Instagram Reels and YouTube shorts, more than their counterparts above 35 years old.

Notably, the report indicates that people often reach for their phones out of habit rather than necessity, with one out of two interactions being habitual.

Underscoring the growing importance of smartphones, the report suggests that these devices have surpassed traditional items like keys and wallets in significance.

The surge in smartphone usage is attributed to the accessibility and affordability of mobile phones, which, for many in India, served as the primary gateway to the internet. As smartphones continue to shape daily routines, their impact on social dynamics and content consumption is undeniable.
