Guwahati: In a bid for the all-round upliftment of the state’s physically disabled people, the Assam government has announced to form a directorate under the name of ‘Director of Social Justice of Empowerment’ here on Friday. It will be created to upgrade the socio-economic and academic empowerment of the abled people.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on the occasion of ‘International Day of Disabled Persons’ at Bhaskar Verma Kshetra, Amingaon.

Addressing the media, CM Sarma said, “Our government promise to extend our help whatever we can do to the persons with disability. Already, the state government has been giving pensions to the physically handicap people.”

Further, mentioning various schemes for the physically abled people, CM Sarma said, “Today we have distributed 4,943 wheelchairs to the especially able people and within one-year wheelchair will be distributed each to 50,000 especially abled people.”

The CM also announced that it had decided to upgrade deaf and dumb schools at Kahilipara and Blind School in Basistha to a higher secondary level.

Minister Ajanta Neog, MLA Nandita Das, MLA Hemanga Thakuria and other officials were also present.
