A total of 208 candidates are fielding in the GMC elections in which a total of 7,97,807 voters, including 4,00,654 females and 26 of the third gender, will cast their votes.

Digital Desk: Following its success in the Punjab Assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is looking to expand its base in the northeastern region and has fielded 40 candidates in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) elections which are going to be held on April 22.

According to AAP's Assam state coordinator Baren Chowdhury, the party has fielded candidates in 40 of the 60 GMC wards and will form the board if it wins a majority of the seats.

Boosted by its first victory in two municipal wards in Lakhimpur and Tinsukia districts in last month's civic polls, the AAP leaders stated that Delhi chief minister and AAP's chief Arvind Kejriwal has been trying to promote morality in politics and that such principles would help the party broaden its base in Assam and other northeastern states.

In the GMC elections, the AAP is attempting to position itself as an alternative to the two national parties, the BJP and the Congress.
