At his restaurant Shish Mahal in the 1970s, Ahmed Aslam Ali created a sauce from a can of tomato soup to create the famous curry.

Digital Desk: Ahmed Aslam Ali, a Glasgow-based chef who claimed to have invented the well-known dish Chicken Tikka Masala, has died, a family member confirmed to AFP on Wednesday. He was 77. According to his nephew, Andleeb Ahmed, he passed away on Monday morning.

After Ahmed Aslam Ali's death was announced by the Facebook page for his restaurant, Shish Mahal, tributes to the chef who created one of Britain's national meals started to pour in.

At his restaurant Shish Mahal in the 1970s, Ahmed Aslam Ali created a sauce from a can of tomato soup to create the famous curry.

In a 2009 interview with AFP, Ali stated that a customer's complaint that his chicken tikka was too dry inspired him to develop the Chicken Tikka Masala recipe.

"This restaurant is credited with inventing Chicken Tikka Masala. We used to serve chicken tikka, and one day a customer requested more sauce because it was a little dry "explained he.

"We decided it would be best to cook the chicken with sauce. As a result, we prepared chicken tikka with a sauce made of yoghurt, cream, and spices "Added Ali.

Later on, Chicken Tikka Masala became popular as one of the most-ordered dishes in British restaurants.
