The accused reportedly collected photographs of the woman from her social media profiles and used AI technology to create an obscene video
Digital Desk: A shocking case highlighting the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has come to light in Makum area of Tinsukia district. Police have arrested a boy for allegedly creating an obscene video using AI and blackmailing a young woman by threatening to make it viral on social media.
The accused has been identified as Ranjit Singh, a resident of Uttarpara, Gopalpur in West Bengal. As per police sources, Ranjit Singh came into contact with the victim, a young woman from Makum, a few months ago through two social media platforms (Facebook and Instagram). The two remained in touch via social media platforms.
However, the situation took a disturbing turn after the woman’s marriage was fixed. Displeased with the development, the accused reportedly collected photographs of the woman from her social media profiles and used AI technology to create an obscene video. He then allegedly threatened to circulate the fabricated video online and began blackmailing the victim.
As a result of the continuous threats, the woman reportedly suffered severe mental trauma. After her family became aware of the incident, they filed a complaint at Makum Police Station. Acting promptly on the complaint, police launched an investigation.
Under the supervision of Sub-Inspector Bitu Saikia, a police team conducted an operation in Kolkata and arrested the accused. Following completion of preliminary investigation, Ranjit Singh was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
The incident has raised serious concerns over the growing misuse of AI technology for cybercrime and harassment amongst the youth.
