A former agriculture union organiser in Tamil Nadu set himself on fire in front of the DMK party office to protest the purported imposition of Hindi...

Digital Desk: In a tragic incident reported from Tamil Nadu's Salem district, an 85-year-old man died after setting himself on fire in protest of Hindi language imposition. 

Thangavel, a former farm union organiser for the ruling DMK party, has been identified as the deceased. The incident occurred in the Thalaiyur neighbourhood of Mettur. He lit himself on fire in front of the DMK party headquarters at Thalaiyur, near Mettur.

Around 11 a.m., the man splashed petrol on his body and set himself on fire, killing self. Until recently, Thangavel was an active member of the DMK. 

Before committing the heinous deed, Thangavel wrote on a banner, 'Modi government, federal government, we don't want Hindi, our mother tongue is Tamil, Hindi is a language for clowns.' Imposing Hindi will have an impact on students' life; get rid of Hindi.' 

Thangavel died as a result of his injuries some time later. Meanwhile, authorities have submitted the body for a postmortem examination, and an inquiry into the crime is continuing.
