Digital Desk: An attempt by India's Adani Group to resume construction on a $900 million transshipment port on the country's southern point was blocked by protesters from a fishing hamlet, a company representative said on Saturday.
Since protesters, mostly Christians and led by Catholic priests, erected a sizable shelter blocking the entrance to the port and claimed the development had caused coastal erosion and deprived them of their livelihoods, construction at Adani's Vizhinjam seaport has been put on hold for more than three months.
Following a court order this week mandating that construction work must resume, the Adani Group, headed by Gautam Adani, the third-richest man in the world, attempted to move heavy vehicles into the port on Saturday, but protesters prevented them from doing so, an Adani spokesperson in the southern state of Kerala told Reuters.
