Guwahati: In a latest development in the state’s political scenario, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Monday that Assam MLA Sashikanta Das has shown eagerness to work with the BJP government and has extended his support for the same. Sarma said that Das will ‘work very closely with the government’ and for the development of his constituency Raha.

Das has not yet resigned from Congress but is touted to eventually join the saffron party. Prior to Das, 2 Congress MLAs – Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain joined BJP citing ‘infighting in Congress.’

Earlier Rupjyoti Kurmi had jumped ship to join BJP after ideological differences within the party began to rise up. Kurmi alleged that he had lost hope in Rahul Gandhi’s leadership and the party is reluctant to give priority to young leaders.

Similarly in August, 2-time Assam MLA Sushanta Borgohain resigned from his post as Thowra MLA blaming the ‘internal political atmosphere’ in Congress. A month later, All India United Democratic Front MLA Phanidhar Talukdar resigned from the Assam assembly and joined the ruling BJP.

It maybe mentioned here that Congress had formed a broad-based alliance with AIUDF, BPF, CPI, CPI(M), Bodoland Democratic Front (BDF) and Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM) to stop the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for a 126 – member regional political stronghold.

In spite of it, the ‘Mahajot’ alliance, the Congress was wiped out by the BJP led by Congress – turned – BJP minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

It is yet not clear whether Sashikanta Das will join BJP or not. It is reported that Das has met Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over certain development projects related to his constituency.

Meanwhile, Das's meeting with CM Sarma, has already caused a political storm and chatters in the political domain.
