Guwahati: The BJP-led Assam government has decided to amend the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021 in the winter session of the state legislature, said Irrigation and Urban Development Minister Ashok Singhal.

Singhal added that the decision was taken as the people faced difficulty transporting cattle from one district to another.

The bill was passed on August 13, which was opposed by the opposition parties, including Congress, AIUDF and CPI (M). After the Assam government refused to refer it to a Select Committee, the opposition party’s leaders walked out of the Assembly.

The Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021 aims at preserving bulls, cows, bullocks, calves, male and female buffaloes and calves by stopping their slaughter, consumption and illegal transportation.

The bill would be amended to allow transportation of cattle from one district to another; however, it will not be allowed in districts having an International border, an official report said.

Moreover, the cabinet will also amend the Assam Police Act, 2007, to make certain changes in the functioning of the State Level Police Accountability Commission.
