Digital Desk: On Saturday, the body of a baby was spotted being dragged around by a dog near the maternity ward of a government hospital in Karnataka's Shivamogga district.

At around 7 a.m. on Saturday, security personnel at McGann District Hospital chased the dog away after noticing it racing through the hospital's maternity ward with what appeared to be a newborn infant in its mouth.

The incident has spurred local officials to evaluate the city's stray dog problem. When the infant was taken for examination, it was already dead.

Authorities are now attempting to determine if the newborn died before or as a result of the dog bite. The child's parents' identities are unknown.

A police report has been made, and the exact time of the infant's death will be determined only after the postmortem. Authorities have begun checking all neighbouring private and government hospitals for pregnant women's records.
