Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Kumar Borah suspended MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed on Monday from the congress party following his infuriating statements on eight people killed in February 1983 during the Assam Agitation.

The decision from APCC comes two days after Ali failed to reply to the show-cause notice served to him.

The order issued by General Secretary, APCC, Bobbeeta Sharma, reads, “Hon’ble president APCC Bhupen Kumar Borah has suspended Sri Sherman Ali Ahmed, MLA, member ACLP from Congress Party with immediate effect for repeatedly violating party discipline.”

However, in the order the APCC has not mentioned the time period of the suspension.

Sherman Ali, the three-time MLA from the Baghbar Assembly constituency, was arrested on Saturday from his residence in the MLA hostel at Dispur based on a case registered in Panbazar police station for his provocative statement.

Currently, Ali is under the custody of the Panbazar police station. The court remanded MLA Ali to two-day police custody with effect from Sunday.
