Digital Desk: A massive explosion occurred in a mosque in Kabul on Wednesday during evening prayers, leaving many people dead or injured, reports said.

Police did not reveal how many people were killed, only that there were several. At least 35 people have been injured or killed, a Taliban intelligence official told Reuters, and the number may go further.  An unnamed authority, according to Al Jazeera, reported a death count of 20.

According to eyewitnesses who spoke to Reuters, a loud explosion that broke windows in surrounding buildings was heard in a neighbourhood in northern Kabul. Later, an ambulance reached the spot.

The Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran stated, "a blast occurred inside a mosque... the incident involves casualties, although the numbers are not yet clear."

Under the condition of anonymity, a Taliban intelligence official said that the explosion in Kabul's Khair Khana neighbourhood took place in a mosque among worshipers.

The report further said that the death toll might go up and that one of those deceased was the mosque's imam. Investigations were ongoing, and intelligence teams were present at the explosion site.

Several queries to other Taliban government officials for confirmation of the death toll received no response.
