Guwahati: Assam Assembly passed the Assam Tenancy Bill that is meant to alleviate conflicts between tenants and the owners in the state.

The Tenancy Act comes up following the repealing of the Assam Urban Areas Rent Control Act, 1972, thereby making the State the first in the country to establish a rent authority to regulate renting of premises and to protect the interest of landlords and tenants.

Both landlords and tenants will benefit from the Act which seeks to provide a smooth resolution to disputes arising between the two parties through the establishment of rent authority, a rent court, and rent appellate at the district level. The Act further specifies the duties and obligations of landlords and tenants regarding maintenance and upkeep of the premises, eliminating any ambiguity in this regard.
