Guwahati: The Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) has asked to set up a tea ministry to strengthen the tea industry in Assam.
ACMS celebrates its 63rd foundation day at its headquarters in Dibrugarh on Monday. The ACMS head, including former DoNER minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, stated that establishing a tea ministry in Assam is a rightful demand. The 195-year-old tea industry presents support to millions of people.
"Tea is one of the important contributors to the state's economy, and millions of people are connected in the tea industry in Assam. When the state can have a ministry for fisheries, why can't we have a tea ministry? The government should come forward to provide sight to the idea. Infact, a tea ministry should have been formed a long time ago considering the greatness of the tea industry in the state. It is the most extended employment creating industry, implementing livelihood to lakhs of people," ACMS president Paban Singh Ghatowar stated.
Assam offers approximately 51 percent of tea produced in the nation. However, inactive prices, lack of rainfall, and the pandemic have left the state's tea industry in exile.
The annual tea production in Assam in 2019 was 716.49 million kg which had to fall to 618.20 million kg in 2020. There is a 14percent drop due to the present Covid 19 lockdown in Assam.
