Guwahati: The Assam government is actively developing strategies to support farmers in Sivasagar district who have suffered extensive crop losses due to recent devastating floods. With many agricultural lands rendered unsuitable for traditional paddy cultivation this season, authorities are exploring and promoting alternative farming methods to help these communities recover.
Addressing the media, Minister Pijush Hazarika highlighted the severe impact of the disaster, noting that nearly one lakh families in Sivasagar have been affected. He further specified that approximately 60,000 farming families have seen their crops and agricultural land significantly damaged. The state administration is collaborating closely with the Agriculture and Irrigation departments to conduct thorough assessments of these losses and identify viable substitute crops for the affected farmers.
To facilitate a swift resumption of agricultural activities, the government has already commenced arrangements for distributing essential paddy seeds and seedlings. However, acknowledging that many fields may not be conducive to paddy this year, officials are also considering a range of other farming options. This includes providing fruit saplings to affected farmers, broadening their agricultural prospects beyond conventional crops.
Looking ahead, comprehensive preparations are also underway to support the cultivation of Rabi crops in the upcoming season. A detailed survey is being conducted by officials to meticulously assess all agricultural damages and compile an accurate list of beneficiary farmers, ensuring targeted and effective relief efforts across Sivasagar.
