Digital Desk: The Assam government made the historic decision on Monday to immediately implement a 3% seat reservation for people belonging to the tea tribe community.
Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced at a news conference that followed the weekly cabinet meeting that was held at the Gandhi Mandap in Guwahati on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.
However, it should be noted that the reservation will apply only to the non-creamy layers.
The Assam Chief Minister (CM) mentioned reservations when he said that two positions, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) and magistrate would be set aside for members of the Moran and Matak communities of Assam.
Meanwhile, CM Sarma said during the press conference that the daily wages earned by workers in the state's tea gardens had increased by Rs 18, which is a significant decision for the tea tribe community.
The Brahmaputra Valley region will raise the earnings of workers in tea gardens from the current rate of Rs 232 to Rs 250.
On the other hand, the new wages for tea garden employees in the Barak Valley would be Rs 228 per day, an increase from the previous rate of Rs 210.
The CM stated that the higher salaries for tea garden workers went into effect on October 1.
Assam CM stated, "Today we held our cabinet meeting at Gandhi Mandap on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. During the meet, we took a slew of major decisions to benefit the people of Assam."
He added that all workers hired by the Assam Tea Company (ATC) who work in tea gardens will receive a 20% bonus from the government.
Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, "We have also decided to give 20% bonus for Durga Puja to all tea garden workers employed under ATC."
