Guwahati, July 3: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday undertook a ground assessment of the severe flood damage in Nepali Khuti village, situated along the Assam-Nagaland border, declaring the scale of destruction in Upper Assam "beyond imagination." He assured affected families of robust government assistance for rehabilitation and rebuilding their lives.
This visit marked the second day of his planned four-day tour across flood-affected districts in Upper Assam. Accompanied by cabinet colleagues Bimal Bora, Keshab Mahanta, and Pijush Hazarika, the Chief Minister navigated the damaged roads and silt-laden stretches of the village atop a tractor, as regular vehicles found the terrain impassable.
Throughout his tour, Sarma made several stops to engage directly with residents, many of whom have been grappling with recovery since devastating floods swept through the region on July 19. "The devastation is beyond imagination. Whatever we have seen on television, the reality is far worse," Sarma stated, underscoring the grim reality on the ground. He met families who had lost their homes, livestock, and in some tragic instances, loved ones.
"We will do everything possible from the government’s side to help the people. We have to rebuild these villages," he affirmed, pledging the administration's full support to help communities recover and reconstruct their lives in the wake of the calamity.
