To pay tribute to Rabindranath Tagore...

Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the Karimganj district would be renamed Sribhumi, after it was decided to pay tribute to Rabindranath Tagore, who had referred to the region as "Sribhumi", decades ago, meaning the land of Maa Lakshmi.

The Chief Minister wrote in a post on X that it has been more than a century since Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore termed the modern-day Karimganj as "Sribhumi". The Assam Cabinet has now complied with this long-standing request from the people and decided to rename it "Sribhumi".

The name is deemed to be a reflection of the aspirations and goals of the Karimganj community altogether. The step taken by the Assam government is intended to connect its rich historical and cultural heritage with its future days to come.
