Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in a momentous ceremony that marked the inaugural day of the autumn session of the legislative assembly. This session holds particular significance as it represents the first sitting of the house in the newly constructed assembly complex.
CM Sarma expressed his deep reverence for the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, stating, "Honoured to have unveiled a statue of Mahatma Gandhi ahead of the first session of the Assam Legislative Assembly in the new complex." He further emphasized that Gandhi's enduring message of peace, nonviolence, and harmony continues to guide and inspire the nation, making him a beacon for the country.
The Assam Legislative Assembly's new building was inaugurated on June 30 by Parliament Speaker Om Birla. For decades, the Assembly had operated from an old tea warehouse, repurposed for its sittings since Dispur became the capital of Assam in 1972. The sprawling 10-acre complex now houses the main building, which accommodates the House, alongside annex buildings for administrative functions and other sections. With a seating capacity of over 180 lawmakers, the new House is well-equipped to serve the state's legislative needs.
The Assam Legislative Assembly currently comprises 126 MLAs, who will conduct their legislative duties in this modern and spacious new setting.
