Digital Desk: The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are at odds over Assam Chief Minister and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma's 'Akbar' statement.

This comes only hours after the Election Commission of India (EC) summoned Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for making an 'Akbar' statement during a public speech in poll-bound Chhattisgarh's Kawardha.

Here's what Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on his X account,

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Congress has withheld the material information from the Hon’ble Election Commission that Mohammed Akbar is their candidate from Kawardha Constituency.<br><br>Therefore legitimate criticism of a candidate does not amount to communal politics. <br><br>Cong will have to face the legal… <a href="https://t.co/B7knnSjvCG">https://t.co/B7knnSjvCG</a></p>&mdash; Himanta Biswa Sarma (@himantabiswa) <a href="https://twitter.com/himantabiswa/status/1717704726098440262?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">October 27, 2023</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Previously, the Election Commission of India (EC) issued a show cause notice to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The commission has urged Sarma to respond to the notice by October 30 at 5 p.m.

The action emerges after the Congress filed complaints with the Election Commission on Wednesday against Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that their comments during the Chhattisgarh assembly election campaign breached the model code of conduct.

Previously, the Congress filed a complaint against Assam Chief Minister Sarma over a speech he gave in Chhattisgarh's Kawardha on October 18 while campaigning against Congress candidate Mohammad Akbar.
