Following CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's orders, Kamrup (Metro) DC Pallav Gopal Jha on Tuesday night carried out the beggar removal drive...

Digital Desk: On the directive of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a late-night drive began in Assam on Tuesday to rehabilitate homeless people living under a flyover in Ulubari, Guwahati, to safe shelters.

Following the CM's orders, Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha visited the area on Tuesday night and led the removal of beggars from the flyover. He also said that "CM continues to visit the city at night and observes the city's problems. For the previous three to four months, Guwahati has seen an upsurge in the number of beggars and street dwellers. This presents several difficulties. We are organising a drive to distribute them to government shelter homes and non-governmental organisations. We're attempting to figure out why they're out on the streets."

Earlier in the day, the CM directed Deputy Commissioner Jha to rehabilitate a family living beneath the Ulubari overpass, which he observes during his nighttime travels to the city. He requested that the police officer provide such families with urgent housing and earning options. The children of these households would be killed if they lived on the road, the CM stated.

Jha explained that the PM makes such travels to Guwahati at night to assess the city's problems.

According to sources, Jha stated that the number of homeless persons and street dwellers has significantly increased.
