Six persons were electrocuted when a high-tension electricity line came into touch with the chariot's top...


Digital Desk: Today in the afternoon hours, a high-power 133 KV electric line electrocuted the 'Phera Rath' (return chariot) of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISCON) at Kumarghat in the Unakoti district, killing six people and injuring around thirty. 


Four main 'Rath' pushers were transferred to GBP hospital in critical condition, while other injured people were transported to local hospitals in Kumarghat, Fatikroy, Ambassa, and Kulai. In the extraordinary calamity on a sacred day, the number of casualties may grow higher.


According to police reports, the ISCON 'Ratha,' a very famous event in Kumarghat, began its journey back at about 4: 45 PM from the Motor Stand area towards the ISCON temple. As the 'Rath' (chariot), built of iron and standing tall, approached the Town Hall, it was struck by a high-tension electric wire. As a result, the entire 'Rath' was electrocuted, and many devout persons pushing it, even those at the top, were shocked and thrown off.

According to preliminary assessments, six individuals perished on the scene, including two little children.


Following the incident, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed his condolences. "Today a good number of devotees lost their lives in a tragic incident of electrocution that occurred during the Ulto Rath," he wrote on social media. The situation has greatly hurt me. I express my heartfelt condolences to the dead families and wish the injured a fast recovery."


The state government would stand by the bereaved families, the CM said.
