In a significant boost to wildlife conservation efforts across Assam, Environment, Forest & Climate Change Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah oversaw the release of ten captive-bred vultures into their natural habitat on August 8, 2026. The pivotal event took place at the Jatayu Aviary within Tewaripal in the Biswanath Wildlife Division, highlighting the state's commitment to protecting its critically endangered scavenger species.
The released birds comprised five slender-billed vultures and five white-rumped vultures, both species facing severe threats in the wild. This initiative is a crucial component of Assam's ongoing comprehensive conservation programme aimed at bolstering the populations of these vital environmental cleaners, whose decline has significant ecological implications.
The vulture release formed a central part of Minister Mallabaruah's extensive visit to the region, which also included engagements at the renowned Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve and Nameri Tiger Reserve. During his tour, the Minister inaugurated the Florican Eco-Tourism Gate at Naramari and the Nameri Silver Jubilee Conference Hall, further enhancing the region's infrastructure for both conservation and sustainable tourism.
Beyond these inaugurations, several community development initiatives were also launched, underscoring a holistic approach to conservation. The day's agenda collectively focused on strengthening biodiversity protection, promoting responsible eco-tourism, and fostering enhanced community participation in the management of protected areas.
