Digital Desk: The interim Budget for 2024-25 has earmarked Rs. 10,369 crores to improve rail infrastructure throughout the Northeast and Assam, representing a substantial enhancement to the region’s railway facilities. This funding is part of the larger Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), which seeks to modernize 60 stations in the Northeast with top-tier amenities.
Among the stations selected for redevelopment is Fakiragram railway station in Assam, which will receive an investment of Rs. 34.60 crores. Situated in the Kokrajhar district, Fakiragram station serves the New Jalpaiguri–New Bongaigaon route under the Alipurduar Division of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). The upgrade will introduce state-of-the-art facilities to improve the travel experience for passengers.
The redevelopment plans include a major expansion of the station building, which will feature a modern facade, new retiring rooms, and an upgraded waiting area. The station will also be made accessible for people with disabilities, with the addition of ramps, modern toilet facilities, lifts, and a 5-meter-wide Foot Over Bridge. New separate toilet blocks for men and women, enhanced parking, and a beautified circulating area are also part of the project. All platforms will be fitted with new shelters and resurfaced with marble stone and tiles to facilitate smoother movement.
Tenders for various components of the project have been awarded, and foundation work for the new station building has begun. Further enhancements, including a Coach Guidance Board, Train Information Display System, platform extensions, and accessible water booths for people with disabilities, are also in progress.
The upgrade of Fakiragram station is expected to generate new job opportunities, boost local businesses, and promote tourism in the area. This comprehensive redevelopment aims to enhance travel convenience and provide significant economic benefits to the city and its surrounding regions.
