This year, the Academy has extended invitations to 487 new members from 68 countries, with 46 percent of them being women and 41 percent representing underrepresented ethnic or racial backgrounds. 

Digital Desk: Rima Das, the National Award-winning filmmaker known for her acclaimed film "Village Rockstar," India's official entry to the Oscars in 2019, has been appointed as a distinguished member of the Academy Awards for 2024.

This year, the Academy has extended invitations to 487 new members from 68 countries, with 46 percent of them being women and 41 percent representing underrepresented ethnic or racial backgrounds. 

Furthermore, 56 percent hail from countries and territories beyond the United States.

Joining Rima Das in this esteemed cohort are notable Indian figures such as actor Shabana Azmi, directors SS Rajamouli and Anand Kumar Tucker, producer Ritesh Sidhwani, cinematographer Ravi Varman, costume designers Rama Rajamouli and Sheetal Sharma, as well as documentary filmmakers Nisha Pahuja and Hemal Trivedi. Together, they enrich the Academy with their diverse talents and contributions to the world of cinema.

Sharing her joy Rima Das says “I am honoured and thrilled to become a member of the Academy. My journey at the Academy began when Village Rockstars was India’s Official entry 2019. Now as part of this incredible community, I look forward to contribute to recognizing the best in our craft, celebrating the power and magic of cinema.”
