The source also stated that a meeting had already been place between the department and the zoology department at Gauhati University.

Digital Desk: The state fishery department does not have the necessary facilities to conduct preliminary testing to detect formalin in imported fish, which has come to light in the wake of reports that fish imported from outside Assam to the local fish markets of Nagaon contain formalin that is 15% poisonous.

Because of this, a source added, the aforementioned department has not yet tested the formalin levels of imported fish in Guwahati.

The source also stated that a meeting had already been place between the department and the zoology department at Gauhati University.

In the meantime, a fish vendor in Bongaigaon's Boro Bazar said during a media interview that fish imported from outside Assam had not been formalin-treated.

We import fish from Bihar, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh, he said. It takes three days to reach Assam and gets sold out within just two days. The fish can be stored on ice for five to six days. The fishery department's most recent test was carried out two years ago, and no formalin was found in the fish.

A group of biology research students from Nowgong College (autonomous) previously stated in a press conference that they had collected samples from different local fish markets throughout the district and thoroughly examined each sample in both the local lab and the lab in Guwahati. The research team received confirmation that the toxic chemical was present in fish sold in markets at this time.

It is to be noted that formalin is used as a disinfectant in industries, a preservative in some food products, funeral homes, etc. It attains the state when formaldehyde is dissolved in water.
