The monsoon fury continued its destructive path across Assam on Friday, as swollen rivers and widespread inundation led to a grim milestone, raising the flood-related death toll to 97. Two additional fatalities were reported from Golaghat and Udalguri districts, underscoring the severe human cost of this year's deluge. Officials confirmed that over 1.68 lakh individuals across 15 districts remain caught in the grip of the ongoing crisis.
The floodwaters have spread their impact widely, affecting districts including Golaghat, Sivasagar, Udalguri, Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, Kamrup, Darrang, Sonitpur, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Jorhat, Charaideo, Karbi Anglong, and Dhemaji. Among these, Golaghat has emerged as the most severely impacted, with nearly 54,000 residents affected. Sivasagar followed closely with approximately 49,000 people battling the aftermath, while Jorhat recorded nearly 27,000 residents facing distress.
The scale of the disaster has steadily increased throughout the week. Earlier reports indicated around 1.6 lakh people affected across 14 districts, a figure that has now risen both in terms of population and geographical spread. In response to the deepening crisis, authorities have established 133 relief camps and distribution centres, providing essential shelter, food, and support to nearly 45,000 displaced individuals.
As the state continues to confront the relentless monsoon, communities across Assam remain vigilant, hoping for a respite from the devastating floodwaters that have disrupted countless lives and livelihoods.
