Assam flood fury: 5 more dead, toll rises to 127

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, paid a visit to Silchar town in the Barak Valley on Sunday morning (his second to the Cachar district headquarters in four days), and he said the rescue and relief efforts in light of the unprecedented flooding had been enormous.

Digital Desk: Assam continued to battle devastating floods in 28 districts on Sunday, adding five more fatalities from rain-related accidents, bringing the death toll to 127. According to a dispatch from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, the five fatalities were reported in the districts of Barpeta, Darrang, Cachar, Morigaon, and Karimganj (ASDMA).

According to ASDMA, more than 2.2 million people in 28 of the state's 35 districts were still under the floods' effects, and about 217,413 displaced persons were finding shelter in 680 relief camps. Of them, 109,623 have sought refuge in one of the worst-affected areas, Cachar, where there are 230 camps.

The flood situation in Silchar town, in Assam's Cachar district, remained dire as some places remained flooded for a seventh day under 5-8 feet of floodwater. For the sixth day in a row, the region's almost 200,000 residents were lacking in food, water, and other necessities. Due to citizens' destruction to a portion of the Barak river's embankment on June 17, around 6 km outside of the town, flooding in Silchar reached historic heights.

The Cachar district administration and all other agencies working in rescue and relief have done fantastic work under the current circumstances, which are unprecedented, Sarma told reporters in Silchar. "I anticipate a gradual improvement in the situation in Silchar. In the following 48 hours, flooding in the town should subside if there is no new rainfall.

The CM conducted an aerial assessment of the district on Thursday and spoke with representatives of three flood-affected districts in Barak Valley, Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi.
